A Chief Magistrate Court sitting at Mapo in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Wednesday, sentenced one Gbolahan Damilare, 21, to six months in the correctional centre for stealing a generator valued at N50,000.

Delivering judgement, the magistrate, O.O. Latunji, convicted and sentenced Mr Damilare following his guilty plea and the overwhelming evidence tendered against him by the prosecution.

Mr Latunji said that because the convict did not waste the time of the court before pleading guilty and was a first-time offender, the sentence to be imposed would be light.

She, however, warned that stiffer punishment would be imposed on Mr Damilare if he refused to turn a new leaf after completing his jail term.

“To serve as a deterrent to others, Damilare is sentenced to six months imprisonment or an option of N50,000,” the magistrate held.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Oluseye Akinola, told the court that the convict committed the offence on December 18 at No. 11 Adewumi St, Felele area, Ibadan, Oyo State.

He added that Mr Damilare was caught after jumping over the fence into the compound of Mr and Mrs Tosin Ojo to steal their generator.

The prosecutor further said that Mrs Ojo sighted the convict disconnecting the cable on the generator and carting it away before she shouted for help.

He added that luck ran out on Mr Damilare when concerned neighbours arrived in time to apprehend him.

Mr Akinola said that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code Cap 38 Vol. II Laws of Oyo State 2000.
