23-year-old sentenced to three-year jail for stealing N49,500 Infinix phone

A 23-year-old, Handsome Kenneth, has been jailed for stealing a phone in Ondo. 

Mr Kenneth, a student, was sentenced by the Ondo Division of the Chief Magistrate Court, following his arraignment in court by the police for stealing. 

He was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for stealing “an Infinix S4 mobile phone” worth N49,500.

The prosecutor, Benard Olagbayi, told the court that the convict committed the offence on September 15, 2022, at the Akiavic Hotel area of Ondo.  

He said the offence was contrary to section 383 and punishable under Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Vol 1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006.

The accused pleaded guilty to the charge and begged the court for mercy. 

Chief magistrate Charity Adeyanju sentenced the accused to three years’ imprisonment with an option of N277,400 fine. 

In another development, 22-year-old apprentice Samuel Uzemezue has been arraigned before the Akure Chief Magistrates’ Court for stealing an electric cable and coils worth N300,000.

Police prosecutor Nelson Akintimehin charged Uzemezue with three counts of conspiracy and theft.

Mr Akintimehin, told the court that the defendant with others still at large committed the offence on October 6, at about 5:00 p.m. at Arakale road, in Akure. 

He explained that the defendant entered a shop and stole six coils of 2.5mm wire valued at N72,000, belonging to one Salome Anyakee.

He said, “The defendant on the following day also stole four coil of 2.5mm wire valued at N46,000, two coils of star wire valued at N37,000, one coil of 16mm purechem wire valued at N75,000, one coil of 6mm purehem wire valued at N35,000, and other coils total valued at N300,000 belonging to the same Anyakee.”

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Chief magistrate Musa Al-Yunnus admitted the defendant to N300,000 bail with one surety in like sum and adjourned the case until November 11 for further hearing.
