A boat carrying dozens of passengers capsized in the Malamawa community, Ringim council area of Jigawa, leaving at least 40 people drowned.

The boat, which was carrying mostly women and children, crashed on Sunday while crossing a waterway in the area.

In a statement on Sunday, the police command in Jigawa said about 40 women and children drowned after the canoe capsized in Ringim LGA.

“Canoe capsizing in Ringim LGA: At least 40 women and children drowned. One body has so far been recovered,” the command said.

It stated that efforts were ongoing to recover the remaining victims.

“The rescue operation is ongoing, and security personnel, alongside emergency responders and volunteers, are working tirelessly to search for those still missing,” the police spokesperson, Shitu Lawan Adam, told Peoples Gazette on Monday.
