44 passengers injured as train derails in France

An 18-year-old woman who was critically injured was airlifted by a helicopter to Rouen University Hospital.

About 44 people were injured on Friday after a train derailed while navigating between Rouen and Caen in Normandy, France.

The passenger train was transporting 180 passengers when the accident occurred.

“A TER train carrying 180 passengers and operating the Rouen-Caen route derailed between Tourville and Elbeuf-Saint-Aubin, in the area of the Cléon commune, in Seine-Maritime,” French Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot said on Friday.

An 18-year-old woman who was critically injured was airlifted by a helicopter to Rouen University Hospital.

Mr Tabarot said 140 firefighters had been deployed to manage the crisis.

“The priority is to care for the passengers and then to restore safe operating conditions,” French rail network operator SNCF Reseau said.
