53-year-old teacher remanded for allegedly defiling student

The Ikeja Chief Magistrate Court on Friday remanded a 53-year-old teacher, Ayodeji Onoviran, in the Kirikiri Correctional Centre for allegedly defiling one of his students.
The chief magistrate, L. A. Owolabi, who refused to take the defendant’s plea, ordered that he should be remanded in Kirikiri Correctional Centre.
Mr Owolabi adjourned the case until November 20 for the Director of Public Prosecutions’ (DPP) advice.
The defendant, a teacher who resides at 13, Opare St., Orile Agege, Lagos, is being tried for rape.
The prosecutor, ASP Adegoke Ademigbuji, told the court that the offence was committed in August 2024 at a secondary school in Ijeshatedo, Lagos.
The prosecutor said a 13-year-old girl was attending a summer lesson organised by the defendant when he defiled her.
The prosecutor said the victim’s aunt saw the changes in her behaviour and, upon an inquiry, she opened up on how the defendant raped her.
The offence, according to the prosecutor, contravenes Section 261 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
