The Ugandan Electoral Commission has declared President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni winner of the presidential elections with 5,851,037, 58.64% of the total votes

Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) came second with 3,475,298, 34.83% of the total votes.

The Electoral commission had announced Saturday morning that Mr. Museveni led the polls with 5.5 million votes (58.8 percent), while Mr. Wine had 3.2 million votes (34.5 percent),

On Friday, the country’s electoral commission also announced President Museveni’s lead at the polls. Opposition candidate, Bobi Wine called this announcement a “joke”, claiming victory over Mr. Museveni in the presidential election.

“I am very confident that we defeated the dictator by far. I call upon all Ugandans to reject the blackmail. We have certainly won the election and we’ve won it by far,” Bobi Wine asserted.

The 38-year-old former musician has been the main rival to Uganda’s veteran leader who has been in power since 1986 and is seeking a sixth term.

Mr. Wine said his house had been surrounded by the military since Wednesday and on Friday, he tweeted that the military had taken over his compound.

He noted that the elections had seen “illegal, high handed actions which Museveni and his regime of blood spillers have undertaken to set the stage for the worst rigging this country has even witnessed,”

The NUP leader said he would speak in detail about these irregularities as soon as the internet was restored.

Internet hacker group, Anonymous, attacked some websites of the Ugandan government in response to the total shutdown of the internet in the country. The electoral commission’s website experienced some downtime.

The internet has remained down for a third day, after the Uganda Communications Commission had sent out letters on Wednesday, ordering telecommunications companies to “immediately suspend any access and use” of social media and online messaging platforms.”

The reports from local media and independent observers have shown that the general elections faced some violence and repression, with arrests of opposition candidates and deadly protests.
