Argentina stun England to set up World Cup final clash with Spain
Defending champions Argentina are through to a second consecutive FIFA World Cup final following a late 2-1 comeback win over the Three Lions of England at the Atlanta Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Argentina will now face European champions Spain in the final of this year’s World Cup at the MetLife Stadium on Sunday. Spain defeated France 2-0 at the Dallas Stadium on Tuesday to qualify for the final.
Following a goalless draw in the first half of today’s match, England took the lead 10 minutes into the second through Anthony Gordon, who slotted home a cross from Morgan Rogers from close range.
However, head coach Thomas Tuchel’s team immediately resorted to a more defensive style to protect the lead, giving Argentina opportunities to mount unrelenting pressure on England’s defence.
England only managed to withstand the repeated attack until the 85th minute when Enzo Fernandez, courtesy of an assist from Lionel Messi, fired home the ball from outside the 18-yard box to equalise for Argentina.
Substitute Lautaro Martínez sensationally scored the winner for Argentina in stoppage time when he headed a cross from Messi past goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, sending the Argentines inside the stadium into wild celebrations.
Meanwhile, England will face France in the third-place match at the Miami Stadium on Saturday.
