Turkey and Saudi Arabia are determined to begin a new period of cooperation, following Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s first visit to Ankara.

The two countries made this known in a joint statement released on Thursday.

The visit came on the heels of the 2018 murder of Saudi journalist, Jamal Khashoggi.

The two countries have emphasised cooperation in bilateral relations, including political, economic, military and security ties, during talks between the crown prince and President Tayyip Erdoğan.

They said they would also work to enhance investments in sectors such as energy, tourism and defence, and ease mutual trade.

Ankara and Riyadh are working to fully normalise ties strained after the brutal murder of Washington Post columnist Mr Khashoggi, in the kingdom’s Istanbul consulate.

U.S. intelligence services identified the 36-year-old crown prince as being behind Mr Khashoggi’s murder.

Mr Erdoğan had back then separately indicated that the crown prince was behind the killing.

A Turkish court, however, moved a trial in absentia of 26 defendants to Saudi Arabia in April.

The Saudi royal house rejected the claim.
