Lagos BRT driver to be detained after hitting pedestrian to death

The police in Lagos have taken into custody, a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) driver, suspected to be responsible for the death of a 26-year-old pedestrian.
The alleged driver hit Reini Akakpo and her one-year-old daughter, Amelia, at Union Road, Dopemu, in the Agege area of the state, Punch newspaper reports.
The media outlet said the victim eventually died at hospital but her child, Amelia, is currently receiving treatment at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja.
Police spokesman in Lagos, Benjamin Hundeyin, told Peoples Gazette that the driver voluntarily turned himself in to the police and has been reporting to the police command daily after he was granted bail.
Mr Hundeyin said it is possible that the alleged driver will not be allowed to return home due to the death of the victim.
“The driver is at the police station. He wasn’t rearrested because he didn’t jump bail. He came to the station himself,” Mr Hundeyin said.
“But today, I don’t know if we will allow him to go today but he has been reporting every day since that day.”
He added, “The case is being sent to the DPP. The DPP will give legal advice on how to proceed and after the DPP’s report is received we will amend the charges if need be and we will know what to indicate in the amended charges.”
Some months back, Another BRT driver, Andrew Ominikoro was charged for alleged rape and murder of Oluwabamise Ayanwola. He is being prosecuted.
