The Lagos State Government has auctioned 83 vehicles forfeited for violating the 2018 Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law.

The auctioning, which took place at the State Task Force, Alausa, was supervised by the state’s justice ministry in collaboration with the State Task Force on Environmental and Special Offences on Monday.

Officials from different state departments attended the programme.

“There is a lot of processes and transparency to the public auction.

Moreso, some of the people whose cars were seized have been told to pay a fine without their cars being forfeited based on the strength of evidence they presented at the Mobile Court,” Arinola Ogbara, an official from the Lagos State Special Offences Mobile Court, said. “Driving against traffic (one way) has caused a huge number of accidents and untold losses to property and human lives.”

Ms. Ogbara said authorities should do more to curb the menace of reckless driving amongst transporters.

Shola Jejeloye, a chief police superintendent who heads the task force, said the aim of the exercise was to correct rather than punish, even though those whose vehicles were forfeited would serve as a warning to other would-be violators.
