At least 157 people have been killed and hundreds are missing after a massive flash flood swept through the Nepal-Tibet border on Wednesday.

Footage of the raging flood damaging structures as it ripped through affected areas emerged on social media on Wednesday.

Nepalese authorities confirmed that about 157 bodies have been recovered, while those missing include more than 100 people from India, 54 from the U.S., 33 from the UK  and about 100 Nepalese citizens.

“A preliminary agency-wise record received from tourism and travel companies has identified 384 travellers, including 291 foreign nationals and 93 Nepali nationals, who were reported missing from the affected areas,” Nepal Tourism Board said.

The devastating flood has attracted global attention, with the international community commiserating with Nepal and the victims of the deadly flash flood.

The U.S. Embassy in Nepal, in a post on X, said it was “deeply saddened” by the loss of life caused by the flood, adding, “We extend our sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives, and our thoughts are with all those affected by this disaster.”

The embassy also warned U.S. citizens to avoid the affected areas.

“U.S. citizens in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, Chitwan and Tanahun should stay away from riverbanks and low-lying areas, seek higher ground, and follow local instructions,” it said.

In a post on X, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “I spoke with Prime Minister Balendra Shah and expressed condolences for those who lost their lives due to the floods that have struck Nepal.”

He added, “In this difficult time, the people of India stand in solidarity with their sisters and brothers in Nepal. India is prepared to provide Nepal with all possible types of humanitarian assistance. Our teams are closely coordinating on rescue and relief efforts.”
