Insecurity: Akeredolu insists on state policing

Ondo governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has restated the need for state police to effectively address security challenges hovering over the country.
Mr. Akeredolu, who was sworn in for his second term in office with his deputy Lucky Aiyedatiwa, on Wednesday, mentioned that it is the sole responsibility of the government to protect citizens
“We have been relentless in advocating for the establishment of state police. There can be another way if we are indeed serious about securing lives and property,” he said.
“The primary responsibility of any government is the security of lives and property of its citizens.”
“We are of the firm belief that it is high time the police central command became devolved to the federating units for effective monitoring,” the governor added.
He stressed that other regions should emulate the regional security network, Amotekun, established in the South-West region.
“It is this incongruity which propelled the southwest governors to form a Regional security Network codenamed Amotekun.”
“The ultimate is to convince others to understand that devolution of authority is inexorable,” Mr. Akeredolu said.
Mr. Akeredolu recently raved the airwaves last month when he gave an ultimatum to unregistered Fulani herdsmen to vacate Ondo forest reserve due to the upsurge of criminality in the region.
The inauguration which was held in Akure had all APC governors in the South-West in attendance. The national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, was present as well as former senate president Ken Nnamani.
