6,146 driver’s licences unclaimed in Delta: FRSC

The FRSC sector commander in Delta, Bassey Eshiet, says no fewer than 6,146 permanent driver’s licences have yet to be claimed by their owners in the state.
Mr Eshiet disclosed this in an interview in Asaba on Monday. He decried the attitude of some motorists who processed driver’s licences and never bothered to collect them.
To avoid sanctions, Mr Eshiet called on those whose processed licences are ready to collect them before the end of April.
“Operation show your legal evidence to drive on Nigerian highways will commence from May 1. The command is poised to get rid of unlicensed drivers from the highways in Delta state,” the FRSC sector commander stated.
He added that possessing a valid licence “remains a major requirement for driving, and the absence constitutes a traffic infraction and endangers the lives of road users.”
According to him, defaulters risk N10,000 fine, six months’ imprisonment, or both.
Mr Eshiet noted that processing the driver’s licence took time to ensure efficiency and quality.
“To obtain a driver’s licence entails an applicant going through driving school and the proficiency test by vehicle inspection officers. With that, defensive drivers can be produced to drive on our highways, and safety can be ensured,” he said.
