E. Jean Carroll sues Trump again for defamation
Two weeks after winning a civil case of sexual assault and defamation against ex-President Donald Trump, E. Jean Carroll has filed a new lawsuit seeking further damages for Mr Trump’s latest remarks on CNN.
In a new filing at a federal court in Manhattan, New York, on Monday, Ms Carroll is seeking additional punitive damages over Mr Trump’s comments during a town hall meeting with Republican voters organised by CNN a day after the jury sided with the journalist and author.
During the event, Mr Trump allegedly dismissed Ms Carroll’s allegations as a “made up” story, part of several comments that resulted in a guilty verdict for the 76-year-old in the initial trial, which he claimed was “rigged.”
The new case was also brought before the same judge who presided over the initial trial as Ms Carroll’s attorneys argued that awarding her client “very substantial punitive damages” would serve as a deterrent to Mr Trump and “deter him from engaging in further defamation.”
Mr Trump was on May 9 ordered to pay $5 million in damages after a jury found the politician to have sexually abused and defamed Ms Carroll in a civil suit over an incident in 1995 or 1996.
The ex-U.S. president was not found guilty of rape in the 2019 lawsuit, which Ms Carroll’s lawyer Roberta Kaplan is now seeking to amend the charges in the filing after Mr Trump’s new comments.
