Scavenger charged with theft of two iron chairs

During police investigation, the chairs were recovered from the defendant but he pleaded not guilty to the charge.

A 19-year-old scavenger, Danjuma Mohammed, on Monday appeared before a Grade I Area Court in Karu, Abuja, for allegedly stealing two iron chairs.

The defendant, who resides in Nyanya, Abuja, is charged with three counts of joint acts, criminal trespass and theft.

The prosecution counsel, Ayotunde Adeyanju, told the court that the complainant, Ernest Amadi, reported the matter at the Karu Police Station on February 11.

He said that the defendant who conspired with one other now at large, went to the complainant’s welding shop and stole two iron chairs worth N25,000.

Mr Adeyanju said that during the police investigation, the chairs were recovered from the defendant.

He said the offence contravened the provisions of sections 79, 348 and 288 of the Penal Code.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The judge, Inuwa Maiwada, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N100, 000 with one surety in like sum.

Maiwada adjourned the case until April 12 for a hearing.
