Police arraign man for attempting to kill couple in Lagos

The defendant, whose address is unknown, is facing a three-count charge of assault, attempt to kill and malicious damage.

The police in Lagos on Friday arraigned a 25-year-old- man, Issac Maforikan, in Badagry for alleged assault and an attempt to kill a couple.

The defendant, whose address is unknown, is facing a three-count charge of assault, attempt to kill and malicious damage.

He, however, pleaded not guilty before a chief magistrates court in Badagry.

The prosecutor, ASP Clement Okuoimose, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on April 20 at 10.00. a.m. on Christ Army Avenue, Egbeda Road, Lagos State.

He said the defendant attempted to kill one Chioma Uzoma and her husband.

Mr Okuoimose said Mr Moforikan, on April 16, at 12.01 p.m., on Olokobi Shibiri Road, Ajangbadi, Lagos State, damaged a property valued at N1,500,000, belonging to Ms Uzoma, the complainant.

”Maforikan damaged clothing materials, perfumes, wines, show-glass, and creams valued at N1,500,000 property of the complainant.

“On the same day, the defendant threatened to kill Chioma Uzoma and her husband with a bullet,” the prosecutor said.

Mr Okuoimose also said the defendant assaulted Chigozie Uzoma by hitting him on the head with a nailed stick, giving him a deep cut.

He said the defendant attempted to kill Mr Uzoma by mixing a ground bottle with food he was about to eat.

“He was arrested and handed over to the police for prosecution,” he said.

The prosecutor said the offences contravened sections 173, 230, and 457 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The chief magistrate, Fadahunsi Adefioye, granted the defendant N200,000 bail with two sureties in like sum.

He said one of the sureties must be the defendant’s blood relation and the other, a religious leader.

He ordered that both sureties have evidence of three years’ tax payment.

Adefioye adjourned the case until September 19 for mention.
