FG reiterates commitment to ensuring safe return of Nigerians from South Africa
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reiterated the federal government’s commitment to ensuring the safe return of Nigerian nationals from South Africa following xenophobic incidents in the country.
The ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, disclosed this in a statement on Friday.
He said that President Bola Tinubu remains committed to the welfare, protection, and safe return of Nigerians imperilled as a result of the xenophobic incidents in South Africa.
Mr Ebienfa said, “39 Nigerian nationals are on a flight back from Johannesburg to Lagos on emergency travel arrangements facilitated by Air Peace to accommodate those unable to return on yesterday’s flight.
“This is to ensure there is no interruption or spillover from the ongoing pre-scheduled evacuation flights from South Africa regarding our nationals whose documentation was affected within the stipulated deadline.”
He explained that the flight was expected to arrive at Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, on Friday at 8:50 p.m. while thanking the management of Air Peace for collaboration and facilitation of the additional exercise.
“The last evacuation flight, which is expected to bring home approximately 300 of our nationals, is expected to arrive in Nigeria next week,” he said.
