A former Chinese premier, Zhu Rongji, has died.

He was aged 97.

According to state reports, the political leader died on Wednesday in Beijing, following an illness.

The politician was born in the southern province of Hunan. He secured a degree in electrical engineering from Tsinghua University before joining politics.

M Zhu served as China’s vice premier from 1991 to 1998, before becoming premier from 1998 to 2003 under President Jiang Zemin’s administration.

He was known as a controversial leader, but firm in introducing and enforcing crucial reforms and policies in China.
