President Muhammadu Buhari will on Tuesday travel to the United Kingdom for medical care, presidential spokesman Femi Adesina announced late Monday.

Mr Buhari’s return to London comes as countries across the globe start to ease travel restrictions after a year of lockdown occasioned by the outbreak of the novel coronavirus.

The president last travelled to London on January 17, 2020, just before the global lockdown. He has not travelled abroad ever since.

The travel restrictions had forced a stay-at-home on affluent Nigerians who are in the habit of embarking on medical tourism.

In November 2020, the Senate expressed concern over frequent medical trips by Mr Buhari, directing relevant officials to ensure the State House Clinic was in good form for presidency’s medical needs.

Nonetheless, Mr Adesina revealed that Mr Buhari will on Tuesday head United Kingdom for a medical check-up.

Mr Adesina also disclosed that the President will meet with security chiefs before embarking on his planned medical trip to London.

“President Muhammadu Buhari will travel to London, the United Kingdom, Tuesday, March 30, 2021, for a routine medical check-up,” Mr Adesina in the statement said.

He added “Before his departure, Buhari will meet with security chiefs first in the morning, then, head to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, for the journey.”

The president is expected to return in the second week of April, 2021, per Mr Adesina’s statement.
