Less than 24 hours after she successfully defended and won her third consecutive Diamond League 100m hurdles, the Athletics Integrity Union (AIU) has filed an appeal to overturn the decision that cleared Tobi Amusan for any wrongdoing after the former world champion allegedly missed three whereabouts tests within a 12-month period.

“The AIU filed an appeal last Friday (15 September 2023) with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the Disciplinary Tribunal’s decision, dated 17 August 2023, that Tobi Amusan did not commit an anti-doping rule violation for Whereabouts Failures,” the commission said in a statement on Monday.

The AIU had earlier in July placed Amusan on a provisional ban from all sporting activities and subsequently charged for violating the anti-doping rules after she missed three whereabouts control tests within a 12-month period but the 26-year-old was cleared of any wrongdoing by an Independent Disciplinary Tribunal a month later.

Immediately the panel made the decision which found the Nigerian not guilty of the charge brought against her, the AIU subsequently concluded it would proceed with an appeal at the CAS, the international body that settles disputes related to sport through arbitration.

Meanwhile, Amusan denied all allegations brought against her.  She maintained that she is a “clean athlete” in a strong statement she released after the initial provisional ban and charge were filed against her.

“I am a CLEAN ATHLETE, and I am regularly; (maybe more than the usual) tested by the AIU – I was tested within days of my third “missed tests”. I have FAITH that this will be resolved in my favour. In the meantime, I ask that the media respect my privacy while I address these allegations in my upcoming arbitration,” she had said.
