Afrobeats musician Azeez Fashola, professionally known as Naira Marley, says he will return to Nigeria to honour the police invitation over the mysterious death of his former Marlian Records signee Promise “Mohbad” Aloba.

“In light of the police invitation, I am making arrangements to return to the country to assist the investigation and give my version of the events,” Naira Marley said in a statement on Tuesday.

He added, “I am fully cooperating with the police team, and I certainly have no reason to be a fugitive when I have no hand in his death.”

There have been several calls for prosecution of the “Tesumole” crooner following a series of videos that surfaced on the internet after Mohbad died on September 12. The videos documented the mistreatment meted out on Mohbad by Naira Marley and his associates, including socialite Sam Larry.

However, Naira Marley, who claimed to have been out of Nigeria since August 31, denied direct and indirect involvement in Mohbad’s death.

“Permit me to categorically state that I have no hand in the death of Ilerioluwa, either directly or indirectly. It is not unusual in the industry, just like in several other industries, to have family friction, even amongst blood relatives,” said Naira Marley.

The singer also denied the allegations of being a drug lord and running a drug cartel disguised as a record label.

“The rumours regarding the label being a drug cartel are untrue. I am not a drug lord, neither do I Marley belong to any cult or fraternity.

Marlian Music is an independent label run by a small, intimate team. We run a legitimate label that focuses on championing exceptional talent, breaking new acts and nurturing them,” Naira Marley stated.
