Three traders jailed seven months each over witchcraft accusation

A Jos Area Court has sentenced three traders, Usman Ibrahim, 29, Ibrahim Kabiru, 36 and Mohammed Abubakar, 30 to seven months imprisonment each for beating up and accusing a man of witchcraft.
The judge, Shawomi Bokkos, sentenced the three defendants on Thursday, after they pleaded guilty to the charge.
Mr Bokkos, however, gave them an option of fine of N50, 000 each.
He also ordered them to pay N100, 000 each as compensation to the complainant and in default to serve another one month each in prison.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Inspector Monday Dabit told the court that the case was reported on September 6, at the ‘C’ Division Police Station by the complainant, Zakari Sabo.
The prosecutor said that the convicts attacked the complainant and accused him of witchcraft, beat him up, tore his clothes and broke his right hand before they were stopped.
Mr Dabit said that the offence contravened the provisions of the Plateau Penal Code.
