Climate Change: Zamfara to distribute 2000 clean cookstoves to residents

The Zamfara government says it will soon distribute 2000 clean cookstoves to poor and vulnerable households as part of its climate action.
Mahmud Abdullahi, the state Commissioner of Environment and Natural Resources, disclosed this on Monday while speaking with journalists in Dubai at the ongoing global climate change conference known as COP28.
Mr Abdullahi said the cooking stoves called Save80 would reduce carbon emissions by 80 per cent.
He said this initiative was to make the residents key into the state’s climate action and, in the process, create awareness of the impact of climate change through incentives.
“That is going to help the community and reduce the number of trees that are being cut or rightly put as deforestation.
“Also, on green energy, we are working on having a solar farm in Zamfara that will generate about 30 megawatts of energy for the state.
“The population of Zamfara now is about 9.5 million, and with this energy initiative, about 4 million will have steady and stable electricity to start with,” the commissioner stated.
The commissioner noted that Zamfara had achieved a lot with its participation at the COP because the state was able to meet some partners and NGOs that were willing to come down and contribute financially.
“We are some Public-Private Partnership (PPP) and some are institutional strengthening. We have gotten a variety of these for the state,” Mr Abdullahi said.
He asserted that an international organisation, GGI Global Initiative, has agreed to help the state develop a comprehensive climate action plan to guide the state on adaptation and mitigation efforts.
He said Governor Dauda Lawal’s administration was funding the two pilot climate action projects to key into the carbon market.
