Ebonyi: Legislator pledges to promote unity

Kama Nkemkanma, representing the Ohaozara/Onicha/Ivo federal constituency in the House Representatives, has pledged to promote peace and unity in Ebonyi.
The lawmaker stated this at the maiden OHANIVO Unity Cultural Carnival on Wednesday at Egunkwo Central School in Onicha LGA.
Mr Nkemkanma said, “Our cultural expression helps define who we are and helps the world see us through our eyes.
“My primary focus as your representative is to promote peace and unity amongst ourselves, and the OHANIVO cultural carnival, designed to showcase our rich and diverse cultural heritage, is one of the means of promoting unity and peaceful coexistence.”
The politician added, “Undoubtedly, no meaningful, measurable growth and progress can be achieved amid crisis, chaos, bickering and disunity.
“As a people, we have come a long way; from 1976 through 1996, we existed as one indivisible Ohaozara LGA (now referred to as Old Ohaozara).”
Mr Nkemkanma noted that the political expansion that split “us into three distinct LGAs – Ohaozara, Onicha and Ivo couldn’t divide us as it brought us into the same federal constituency, and we have continued to coexist peacefully.”
The lawmaker said there was a need to define “who we are through culture, our way of life and tell our stories in our unique way.”
He said the carnival was expected to serve as a unifying symbol for the people of the constituency and a reminder that they are one indivisible people.
The carnival featured cultural dances by different cultural troupes from various communities, masquerade displays and other cultural exhibitions.
