A 37-year-old man, Mas’ud Mohammed, appeared before the Magajin Gari Shari’a Court, Kaduna, on Thursday for damaging and refusing to return a rented Canon video camera.

The defendant pleaded guilty to the offence bordering on breach of trust, mischief and falsehood.

The defendant, who resides at Abuja Road, Rigasa, begged the court to give him time to pay the outstanding fee for hire and to repair the video camera.

The prosecutor, ASP Luka Sadau, said that the accused had in February 2023 rented a Canon video camera from Hamisu Bawasa, the manager of a media solutions company.

Sadau said that the accused hired the camera for N11,000 per day.

Mr Muhammad failed to return the camera after a week.

The prosecution said that the accused told the company that he travelled to cover a political rally in Kano, and on the way to Kaduna, he had an accident and the camera was damaged.

The prosecutor said that the defendant had promised to repair the camera and pay N66,000, being late fees and balance for the hire, but failed to do so.

The judge, Isiyaku Abdulrahman, admitted the defendant to bail because he provided reliable proof.

Abdulrahman adjourned the matter until February 6.
