The Well Being Foundation Africa has sensitised 70 secondary school students of St. Anthony’s Secondary School, Ilorin, Kwara State, on the importance of education, personal hygiene and domestic violence.

The sensitisation programme was held in commemoration of the 2024 International Day of Education.

The Programme Lead for WFBA, Kehinde Akinsola, said the lectures given to the students were in line with this year’s theme of “Learning for Peace.’’

He said, “We felt we should take the pupils through how they can learn in a peaceful way and to make them know how learning can make us have a peaceful society. That is why we included the lecture on gender-based violence which is meant to let them know what to look out for and speak out when it happens. So, it is just about knowledge transfer, so that what is taught will be shared amongst their friends and classmates.’’

One of the facilitators, Zainab Jimoh, took the pupils through what gender-based violence is and how to identify an abuser and the signs to look out for.

She urged them to speak up when going through abuse or any form of violence.

Another facilitator, Janet Ogunkayode, lectured the pupils on the importance of education and its advantages.

The nurse educator, Asmau Busari, lectured the pupils on germs and the importance of maintaining personal hygiene, especially hand washing.

The pupils were shown practical ways of washing hands to have clean hands free of germs.

One of the teachers who attended the lecture with the pupils,  Omolade Omojola, advised the students to imbibe the lessons learnt and put it to use in their daily activities.

One of the students, Ahmed Mohammed, said the lecture was enlightening.

Mr Mohammed said that domestic violence was fast becoming a norm in society, and that it needed to be reduced to the barest minimum.
