Iconic ‘Broadway’ star Chita Rivera dies at 91

Legendary American actress, singer, and dancer Chita Rivera, known for her iconic roles in Broadway musicals, passed away in New York on Tuesday.
According to the New York Times, Rivera’s daughter, Lisa Mordente, announced the death in a statement.
Rivera’s breakthrough came with her role as Anita in the original Broadway production of “West Side Story” in 1957, earning her widespread acclaim.
She featured in numerous other Broadway classics, including ‘Bye Bye Birdie,’ ‘Chicago,’ and ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman.’ Rivera was celebrated for her exceptional dance skills, vibrant stage presence, and powerful performances.
Throughout her career, Rivera received numerous accolades, including two Tony Awards for Best Leading Actress in a Musical for her performances in ‘The Rink’ (1984) and ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’ (1993). She also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the United States, recognising her contributions to the arts.
Beyond her stage work, Rivera appeared in films and television shows, showcasing her versatility as a performer.
She passed away, leaving a remarkable legacy in the performing arts world.
