Ghana’s media union condemns legislator for slapping journalist
The Ghana Journalists Association has accused Farouk Mahama, a member of the state parliament of allegedly attacking a journalist.
The GJA also requested that media organisations across the country refuse Mr Mahama access to media platforms and coverage, according to a report published by the BBC on Tuesday.
Mohammed Alabira, a journalist with Citi TV in Accra, was allegedly attacked by Mr Mahama while he was covering a political function in Yaba, northern Ghana, featuring the MP who is a member of the Ghanaian New Patriotic Party.
The journalist was said to have been kicked and slapped by Mr Mahama and his team when he was reporting on the mayhem that broke out during the party’s primaries.
According to the report, police said they have commenced investigations into the matter.
In response, GJA also issued a 10-day ultimatum to the police and the ruling NPP to apprehend and prosecute the offenders.
According to CPJ’s data, 14 journalists and media professionals in Ghana have suffered physical attacks since 2019 while doing their jobs.
