Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti has warned newly-elected local government councillors against perceiving their chairs as rivals, saying this could dim the chances of effecting positive changes and developing the third tier of government.

Mr Oyebanji said this on Monday in Ikere-Ekiti while flagging off a one-day capacity training, powered by a House of Representatives member, Adeniyi Ojuawo, for the new councillors in Ise/Orun, Ikere and Ekiti Southwest local government areas of the state.

The governor, represented by his deputy, Monisade Afuye, congratulated the councillors on their recent local government election victories, appealing that they should discharge their legislative duties with utmost honesty, passion, dedication, loyalty and diligence.

To avert internal squabbles that could stoke intra-party crises and derail governance, he urged the elected officials to work harmoniously with the executive to effectively implement the government’s policies toward the state’s development.

He advised that they perceive the opportunity as a veritable window to make tremendous positive impacts in the electorate’s lives, not an avenue for corrupt enrichment and playing of divisive politics.

“You all know the priority I have placed on developing our local government system and getting it right in our local politics. We have demonstrated this by the quantum of projects initiated at that cadre by allowing high leverage of financial independence for our councils under my leadership.

“Be rest assured that this loyalty to our people will continue as we make Ekiti progressive across boards,” the governor said.

Mr Oyebanji promised not to poke his nose into how the councils deploy their funds. He said he would place mechanisms to monitor compliance with financial regulations to benefit rural dwellers.
