Arab League condemns U.S. veto of ceasefire resolution on Gaza

The secretary-general of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, has condemned the use of the veto by the United States to thwart an Algeria-drafted UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, according to reports.
The state-run Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported this on Wednesday.
The move to foil the resolution undermines the UN’s credibility and demonstrates that it is incompetent in resolving the situation in the enclave, the LAS chief was cited as saying.
The resolution, proposed by Algeria, also urged the prevention of civilian displacement in the southern city of Rafah, which is the target of a planned Israeli ground offensive.
The U.S. has regularly impeded any resolution on Gaza that may hinder Israeli military operations.
Washington, in particular, blocked a Brazil-drafted resolution in October 2023 and a resolution drafted by the United Arab Emirates, which called for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip in December.
