Stakeholders list benefits of physical activities as Oyo SWAN holds sports day

A sports administrator, Clementina Doregos, has said good education with sports remain perfect tools to equip a man with needed life skills to be a world changer, formidable and perfect person.
Mrs Doregos, Founder of Doregos Private Academy, Lagos, stated this while delivering a paper at a Sports Day Lecture and Table Tennis competition organised by the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, Oyo State chapter, on Monday in Ibadan.
The guest lecturer, represented by the Head of School, Doregos Private Academy, Adebisi Adegbulugbe, said that research had proven the existence of a direct correlation between physical activities and academic performance.
Mrs Doregos, while reflecting on the theme of the SWAN sports day, “Raising a Complete Man: The Place of Academy and Sports,” noted that education and sports play a significant role in maintaining a good health, finances and general wellbeing.
She noted that for a man to operate as a truly complete person, a right amount of care must be given to such an individual body, soul and spirit which could be likened to the man, his education level and his sports life respectively.
She stated, “The fundamental duty of education and sports in human life is integration of the physical, intellectual, emotional and ethical status of the individual into a complete man. In order to operate as a truly complete person, the right amount of emphasis must be placed on the sports and academic life of a man.
“An illiterate or ill-literate sportsman without the proper knowledge of healthy meals/diets through education may not be relevant in his career-path as a sportsman. Also, a literate person without sports/exercises may soon fizzle out in his chosen career due to a sedentary lifestyle.’’
Also speaking, a sports consultant, Toyosi Oyetunji, urged sports journalists to always be constructive in their reportage to encourage the sports sector in Nigeria. He lamented that journalists often destroy a country’s sports brand for personal gains with their reports.
This, he said, often discourages sports sponsors and hinders the pace of sports development in the country.
He advised sports journalists to take advantage of social media platforms to develop and enrich themselves through positive contents creation.
Earlier, Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Oyo State Chapter, Demola Babalola, urged journalists to imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship in the forthcoming SWAN election in the state.
On his part, the Oyo SWAN Chairman, ‘Niyi Alebiosu, lauded the support of Mrs Doregos towards sports development in Nigeria through her various competition sponsorships.
The programme featured presentation of awards, recognitions as well as table tennis competition among journalists from different media outlets in Ibadan.
