The All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS) has urged President Bola Tinubu not to scrap the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC).

The national president of the union, Muhammad Musa, made the appeal while briefing journalists in Abuja on Thursday.

The commission was among government agencies and commissions being considered for possible scrapping as recommended by the Oronsaye Report.

The report recommended that the commission’s functions be transferred to the Department of Basic and Secondary Education of the Federal Ministry of Education.

Mr Musa said scrapping the commission would negatively impact the country’s secondary school education quality.

He added that the proposal, if implemented, would destroy the already fragile secondary education system.

“Scrapping the commission will destroy the secondary education sector and destroy the good structure already put in place. If the Oronsaye report’s axe is allowed to fall on the commission, it will bring an end to the current sustained collaborative efforts between NSSEC and the states to reposition secondary schools,” he said.

The president further expressed fear that the commission, if scrapped, would leave secondary and technical schools to take effective charge of the sector.

Therefore, he called on Tinubu to reconsider the recommendation, allow the commission to exist, and continue providing the needed interventions to strengthen secondary school education in the country.

Mr Tinubu, on March 7, inaugurated a committee for implementing the Oronsaye Report, which recommends the merger of some ministries, departments, and agencies to cut the cost of governance.
