The Bauchi State police command has said seven people were killed in a head-on collision at Kajitu village near the New Tipper Park along the Bauchi-Maiduguri road.

The command’s spokesperson, Nafiu Habib, said in a statement on Sunday that the crash occurred at about 10:30 p.m. and involved a MAN tipper truck and a Ford Galaxy vehicle.

Mr Habib said preliminary investigation by the officer in charge of the command’s Motor Traffic Division (MOTORPOL) stated that the accident involved a yellow MAN tipper truck with registration number BAU-474XW, driven by Harisu Umar, 27, of Yuli Village in the Ganjuwa Local Government Area, and a red Ford Galaxy marked KRF-198XA, driven by Musa A.M. Musa, 38, of Misau Town.

He said the Ford Galaxy was carrying 10 passengers.

The passengers were identified as Ibrahim Mohammed, Garba Babaji, Abba Abbo, Mohammed Dogo, Alkali Galadima, Mohammed Guraza, Rabi’u Mohammed and three others.

Mr Habib added that the tipper truck was travelling from Gida Dubu Housing Estate to Bada Romo Village in Ganjuwa LGA, while the Ford Galaxy was heading from Misau to Bauchi metropolis.

“On reaching the aforementioned place, the tipper truck driver reportedly applied brake suddenly to avoid hitting another vehicle in front, lost control, veered off his lane and had a head-on collision with the oncoming Ford Galaxy,” he said.

He said the occupants of the Ford Galaxy sustained varying degrees of injury and were rushed to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi, where seven passengers were confirmed dead.

The deceased were identified as Ibrahim Mohammed, Garba Babaji, Abba Abbo, Mohammed Dogo, Alkali Galadima, Mohammed Guraza and Rabi’u Mohammed.

Mr Habib said the remaining victims were receiving treatment and both vehicles were badly damaged in the crash.

He added that the bodies of the deceased had been released to their families for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.

The police spokesperson said an investigation had commenced to determine the immediate and remote causes of the accident.
