NCoS restates commitment to staff development, welfare

ACC Abubakar Umar, national spokesman, the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), says the service remains committed towards promoting welfare and career development for its workforce.
Mr Umar said this in an interview with journalists on Sunday in Abuja.
He said that the NCoS would achieve the objective through regular training and other welfare programmes for its personnel.
The spokesman said that the Controller-General of NCoS, Haliru Nababa, had taken several steps to empower, train and retrain officers and men of the service.
”The service places serious emphasis on staff training and development, this has necessitated the recent establishment of a directorate for the purpose.
”We recognise the fact that training and retraining is the primary empowerment any organisation can give to its staff.
”When the workforce is trained, members of staff become proficient in their jobs, and their job performance comes with satisfaction,” he said.
Mr Umar said that currently, some staff of the service were undergoing advanced courses at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS).
”Some of our staff are also undergoing training at the National Institute of Security Studies (NISS), Armed Forces Command and Staff College (AFCSC), National Defence College (NDC), and other institutions.
”We are also empowering members of staff through our welfare scheme, known as the Correctional Welfare Insurance Scheme.
”This scheme has provided safety nets for staff and has provided succour for officers and men, both in service and those who have retired.
”We also have a mass housing scheme through which staff can own their own houses at any location of their choice. All these are geared towards empowering our staff,” he said.
