Pastors Sam Adeyemi and Tunde Bakare are two of church leaders who have added their voices to the ongoing movement to end SARS.

Mr. Adeyemi tweeted on Sunday morning that it is “totally unacceptable” for the police to attack peaceful protesters. He also encouraged young people to continue to speak against societal ills, not as victims but as leaders.

“I appeal to leaders in government and the police force, please listen and respond. #ENDSARSNOW as a courageous commitment to change.” Mr. Adeyemi said.

Mr. Bakare was a running mate to President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2011 presidential election. He also said on Sunday, “It is with heavy hearts that I have followed the #EndSARS protests as young and older Nigerians from various walks of life, across the length and breadth of the nation and diaspora are united in rejecting the harassment, humiliation and cold blooded murder of their citizens. I recognise this movement.”

On Saturday, Catholic archbishop of Lagos, Alfred Adewale Martins, supported #EndSARS protests and advised police authorities to listen to the people.

Government officials and politicians often leverage the influence of religious leaders to advance their interests.

Some protesters believe that it could be easier to get the government to #EndSARS if popular religious leaders publicly back the campaign against police brutality.
