‘They couldn’t push me further,’ Ruger explains why he left D’Prince’s Jonzing World

Nigerian Afrobeats singer Ruger has opened up about what influenced his decision to leave his former record label, Jonzing World.
The singer tweeted on Thursday that the label, headed by D’Prince, focused more on profits from his career than promoting his work or helping him reach new opportunities.
Nonetheless, Ruger appreciated Jonzing World’s role in his career.
He tweeted, “As much as I’m very appreciative of the fact that Jonzing World introduced me to the world, I just couldn’t continue with them because they got too comfortable with the money they were making from me and couldn’t push me further, as I wanted to be pushed.”
The singer said that despite plans to renegotiate, he could only envision another five years with the proactive support he desired.
Ruger said, “I was supposed to renegotiate the contract, but I couldn’t imagine five more years without action.”
He further called the label out for diverting the earnings generated from his work to support up-and-coming artistes they had also signed during the period.
The “Asiwaju” singer wrote in pidgin, “Dey use my money Dey fund new artiste, leaving me in the dark, not being transparent. I just laugh how e be now”
Ruger, who boasted of his career growth and his ambitious plans for the future, said there were other details to be revealed, but for fear of being attacked.
“Many things to to talk but dem fit go wait for me for ikoyi link bridge stab me wotowoto. Anyways, I’m proud of myself. Performing at very big festivals this year, touring Europe again, touring Canada again, and IDC I’m gonna be cocky coz this is shit they couldn’t do for me. BS!!”
In 2021, Ruger joined Jonzing World and rose to prominence with his chart-topping track ‘Bounce’, securing multiple accolades such as AFRIMA’s ‘Best Newcomer Artiste’ and Soundcity’s MVP awards for ‘Best New Artiste’.
There has been no reaction from D’Prince, the boss of the Jonzing Record label, regarding the situation with Ruger.
