Buhari asks Israel, Palestine to respect human rights

President Muhammadu Buhari has called on Israel and Palestine authorities to respect human rights, saying his administration is watching the unfolding conflicts that have recently beset the peninsula.
This warning came in a statement issued through the minister of foreign affairs on Thursday, which urged both parties to de-escalate hostilities and commit a two-state solution.
“The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to state that the Federal Government of Nigeria is watching with great concern the unfolding developments with Israel and the State of Palestine and urges both parties to see reason and de-escalate the hostilities,” foreign affairs spokesman Ferdinand Nwoye said in the statement. “The Federal Government further urges the two parties to remain committed to the two-state solution and, in the meantime, guarantee the rights of all citizens to live in peace and dignity.”
Israel and Palestine have been locked in violence since last week when Gaza residents launched airstrikes into occupied areas of East Jerusalem. About 80 people have been reportedly killed in Palestine while Isreal reported nearly 10 deaths since Monday.
Hamas militants have continued to launch rockets into civilian-populated areas in Israel, with Israeli forces claiming to have neutralised a top Hamas commander. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to protect Israelis caught in the conflict.
Foreign leaders, including U.S. President Joe Biden, have issued similar calls as Mr Buhari, urging an immediate de-escalation of hostilities and respect for human rights.
