Drug availability in Kano public health facilities has increased to 90%: Official

The Kano Drugs and Medical Consumables Supply Agency (DMCSA) says drug availability in public health facilities has increased from 30 per cent to more than 90 per cent within three years.
The director-general of the agency, Gali Sule, said this on Monday during a news conference in Kano marking the third anniversary of Governor Abba Yusuf’s administration.
Mr Sule said the anniversary, which coincided with the third anniversary of his appointment on July 16, provided an opportunity to review the agency’s performance, achievements and future plans.
He said the agency, established to procure and distribute quality, affordable drugs and medical consumables to government-owned health facilities, had recorded significant progress under the current administration.
According to him, drug availability in public health facilities was about 30 per cent when the administration assumed office in 2023, leaving most essential medicines unavailable.
He, however, said sustained government interventions had increased the availability of medicines and medical commodities to more than 90 per cent across the state.
“This achievement has been recognised and applauded across the country because we never imagined it could be attained within three years,” he said.
Mr Sule also said the agency inherited about N1.2 billion in debts owed to pharmaceutical suppliers, but cleared those liabilities completely by January 2026.
He described the debt clearance as a major milestone that restored suppliers’ confidence and strengthened the state’s medical supply chain.
He said the achievement earned Mr Yusuf an Award of Excellence and Appreciation from the Association of Nigerian Industrial Pharmacists.
He said the award would be presented on July 16 in recognition of the governor’s commitment to settling the inherited debts.
Mr Sule added that activities marking the anniversary began with Quranic recitation and special prayers for Nigeria, Kano, Mr Yusuf, the Ministry of Health and other leaders.
