Google, on Thursday, announced the termination of 28 employees directly and indirectly linked to protests staged across different office locations in the U.S. over its contract with the Israeli government.

Following a Time magazine article that said Google charged Israeli authorities over $1 million as a consultation fee last week, demonstrators besieged different Google offices to lodge their complaints that the tech company was working for a nation, they claimed, was responsible for genocide in the Gaza Strip.

Protesters, on Tuesday, wore T-shirts with words like “Googlers against Genocide” and “No Tech for Apartheid” to convey their grievances against Google working for Israel.

But Google, in a statement by its spokesperson, denounced the protests, stressing that its Israeli cloud service contract had nothing to do with the ongoing war.

“This work is not directed at highly sensitive, classified, or military workloads relevant to weapons or intelligence services,” VOA cited the company’s spokesperson as saying.

“We have so far concluded individual investigations that resulted in the termination of employment for 28 employees, and will continue to investigate and take action as needed.”

The company further noted that the demonstrations were staged “by a group of organisations and people who largely don’t work at Google.”
