Residents of Ikole-Ekiti in the Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti urged the lawmakers representing the state on Wednesday to prioritise the welfare of their constituents.

A cross-section of the residents who spoke with journalists in Ikole-Ekiti also enjoined the lawmakers, including the senators, House of Representatives members and state lawmakers, to fulfil their promises to their constituencies.

Bisi Ogunsakin, a teacher, said the constituents expected food, money and infrastructure to cushion the effects of the current economic condition in the country.

“The current economic challenges facing Nigerians are resulting in depression, hypertension and untimely death as a result of a lack of food, money and assistance.

“We urge our lawmakers to provide food, jobs and financial assistance as well as organise skills acquisition programmes to cushion the effect of the current economic challenges,” he said.

Mr Ogunsakin said that the youth were looking up to them for jobs, empowerment and scholarships to help them attain their potential.

“I want to advise our elected lawmakers in Ekiti to find lasting solutions to the challenges facing their constituencies and the residents.

“Many youths who are jobless need empowerment, scholarship and jobs in order to be useful to the society and this can only be possible with the help of God and our elected lawmakers.

“I urge them to fulfil their promises to the people at the grassroots who trusted their capabilities and voted for them,” he said.

Another resident, Godwin Lawal, a farmer, said he expected the lawmakers to initiate development policies and projects that would benefit their constituents.

Mr Lawal noted that people voted for personalities rather than parties because they trusted them.

Similarly, Tolulope Oni, a trader, advised the lawmakers to be committed to the development of the state and always give priority to the welfare of the people who voted for them.

Ms Oni noted that some politicians were toying with the welfare of the people in their constituencies after achieving their ambitions.

“I want to ask our lawmakers to be committed to the development of the state and their constituencies.

“We voted for them because we believed they were competent, reliable and trustworthy and that they would support our governor, Biodun Oyebanji, to improve the economy of our state.

“I want to appeal to them to be open and accountable to the people who voted for them so as to earn their trust after their tenure,” she said.

Another resident, a fashion designer, Bosede Ogunjobi, urged the lawmakers not to disappoint their supporters who voted for them.

Ms Ogunjobi called on them to empower the youth and initiate development programmes that would be beneficial to their people.
