Anambra school shut as teacher flogs pupil to coma

A teacher at the Landmark School in Mgbakwu, Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State has been arrested for allegedly flogging a Primary II pupil into a coma.
The Commissioner for Education, Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, stated this to journalists in her office on Monday.
Mrs Chuma-Udeh said she summoned the school proprietor and the 30-year-old teacher, Faith Nwonye, to explain what made her put the eight-year-old in that condition.
She said that the medical doctor treating the pupil said that the chances of the child’s survival were as slim as 20 per cent.
Also announcing the permanent closure of the school, the commissioner stated that the move was not only because of the incident, but also due to the illegal operation of the school.
She noted that the operations of illegal schools in the state and the beating of children were criminal acts, warning those engaging in such activities to stop.
