Court grants Abba Kyari two-week bail on compassionate grounds

The Abuja Division of the Federal High Court has granted a two weeks bail to embattled former commander of the Force Intelligence Response Team, of the Nigeria Police Force, Abba Kyari, on compassionate grounds.
The presiding judge, Justice Emeka Nwite, granted him a N50 million bail and a surety in like sum pending the ruling on his bail application, which is fixed for May 31, 2024.
According to the copy of the order delivered on Tuesday, Mr Nwite held that the surety must be his counsel in the matter, who should hand over a copy of his call to bar certificate to the deputy registrar of the court.
The court also ordered the suspended deputy commissioner of police to hand over his international passport to the court and ensure he always reports to any nearest NDLEA office within the granted period of the bail.
The two-week bail granted to Mr Kyari, who was arrested on February 14, 2022, over his alleged links with an international drug cartel, comes almost three weeks after losing his mother, Yachilla Kyari, on May 5, 2024.
Mr Kyari, alongside other members of his IRT team, were later arraigned on March 7, 2022, by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
