Authorities in Iowa, United States, say they are still counting bodies after a devastating tornado ravaged Greenfield, a small town with 2,000 residents on Tuesday.

According to VOA, the tornado damaged homes and cars in Greenfield, while the strong winds twisted and toppled wind turbines as it moved eastward, causing damages in parts of Illinois and Wisconsin.

An unspecified number of people have been killed as a result of the tragedy, with at least a dozen patients in Greenfield’s hospital, which was also affected by the tornado, being injured.

Officials deemed the injuries too serious for the patients to be evacuated to another facility, Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Alex Dinkla said.

“Sadly, we can confirm that there have been fatalities,” Mr Dinkla said at a news conference Tuesday night, without specifying how many. “We’re still counting at this time.”

In a Facebook post on Tuesday night, Adair County Health System said it had set up a triage centre at Greenfield High School and that people who need medical attention should go there.

A mandatory curfew was imposed by authorities in Greenfield with only residents allowed to enter the town until Wednesday morning. Even journalists were told to leave the town on Tuesday night.
