Protests have broken out in Kano over ongoing tussle between newly-appointed Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II and deposed Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero for the throne of the Kano Emirate.

Tensions have risen across cities in Kano since the state governor Abba Yusuf signed an executive order removing Mr Bayero, who was appointed by Mr Yusuf’s political opponent and former Kano state governor Umar Ganduje late last week.

He subsequently returned Mr Sanusi, who was sacked from office by Mr Ganduje to the throne which has heightened tensions in the state between supporters of the two rulers who are simultaneously laying claim to the throne.

Some young people marched through Kano cities on Saturday evening, demanding the state government to backtrack from its decision and return to the dethroned ruler, Mr Bayero, back as the emir of Kano.

Following an observation of a special prayer session, the protesters began marching towards the palace where Sanusi is holding court with some of them setting bonfires on major roads in the state while chanting anti-government songs.

Policemen and other security forces were on ground to monitor the protests and made no move to disperse the protesters as seen in viral videos.
