WTT Contender Lagos: Lower-ranked Ding Yijie stuns Shao Jieni as women’s singles semifinals take shape
Being 447 below her opponent did not hinder China’s Ding Yijie (WR 504) from upsetting Portugal’s Shao Jieni, who is ranked 57 in the world, to reach the semifinals of the women’s singles event at the ongoing 2024 WTT Contender Lagos.
Yijie defeated Jieni 3-1 (11-7, 9-11, 4-11, 9-11) to book her spot in the last four, where she will face India’s Mukherjee Ayhika for a place in the women’s singles final, in which a new champion will be produced following elimination of Shin Yubin earlier on Saturday.
Ayhika (WR 140) thrashed Egypt’s Badawy Farida (WR 331) 3-0 (11-6, 14-12, 11-5). Farida made headlines on Friday following her stunning round of 16 win against India’s Batra Manika (WR 28), which took the 20-year-old to her first-ever WTT tournament quarter-finals.
The women’s singles semifinal matchup is now set as Mukherjee Sutirtha and Sreeja Akula in an all-Indian clash, while Ayhika and Yijie tango in the other game as they fight to become the new women’s singles champion.
