Lagos: Fire guts Ladipo spare parts market

The popular Ladipo market in Oshodi, Lagos, was gutted by fire on Sunday morning, local reports say. The section of the market hosting vehicles spare parts dealers was particularly affected.

The fire broke out around 8:00 a.m. from a shop that sells motor spare parts at the Alapeju section of the market, Peoples Gazette learnt.

There were no casualties or injury recorded at the scene. 

Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service said it saved properties worth millions of naira from being consumed by the inferno.

The director of the Service, Margaret Adeseye, was said to have received a call on Sunday morning that a building in the market had caught fire.  

The agency noted that investigations are still ongoing while the cause of the fire incident has not been ascertained.

“The Lagos State Fire & Rescue Service has saved multi-million naira worth of commercial buildings from being consumed by fire in Mushin axis of the State,” the Lagos emergency responder tweeted via @LagosRescue.

“The Director of Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Mrs. Margaret Adeseye, disclosed that the Agency received distress call at about 0731hrs on Sunday morning from 5, Rowland Street, Olateju, Ladipo Market, Mushin Lagos, that a building was on fire.”

“Firefighting operations started immediately as two Fire Stations, Bolade and Ilupeju were mobilised to curtail the spread of the inferno from causing more damage, which led to the prevention of other market buildings from being razed by the fire,” the tweet added . 

Mrs Adeseye further stated that on arrival at the scene, fire had gutted a one storey circular block of multitude shops used to trade in spare parts.

Barely three weeks ago, Cairo market in Oshodi, was also razed by fire. Traders lost goods worth millions of naira in the fire accident.
