Police confirm explosion in Port Harcourt market

The police in Rivers have confirmed the explosion of a substance suspected to be dynamite at the popular Mile 3 Market in Port Harcourt Local Government Area of the state.
Peoples Gazette earlier reported that the explosion early Monday injured an unconfirmed number of people around the area.
State police spokesman, Nnamdi Omoni, in a statement identified the cause of the explosion as locally fabricated dynamite.
Mr Omoni said, “a locally fabricated dynamite, exploded when one Mrs Ifemia Aloke, popularly known as ‘mama Joy’ opened her fish shop, inflicting injuries on her son and one other young lady who are currently receiving medical attention. No life was lost in the incident.”
He noted that the explosive ordnance team of the police was immediately despatched to the scene to sweep and render the entire market safe.
The Police Commissioner, Eboka Friday, has also ordered a full-scale investigation into the incident to unravel the cause and bringing the perpetrators to justice, Mr Omoni said.
