Amnesty International has condemned the federal government for suspending Twitter’s operation in Nigeria.

On Friday, Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed announced the indefinite ban placed on Twitter across the country.

The minister said that the social media platform is being used for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.

The human right body has however called on the Buhari administration to reverse the unlawful suspension of Twitter and other plans to suppress the media, civic societies and undermine Nigerians’ human rights.

Amnesty International in a statement on its official Twitter page, condemned the action exhibited by the federal government while stating that the action is incompatible with Nigeria’s international obligations under the human right policies that guide the country.

“Amnesty International condemns the Nigerian government’s suspension of Twitter @Twitter in #Nigeria🇳🇬 — a social media widely used by Nigerians to exercise their human rights, including their rights to freedom of expression and access to information. #TwitterBan,” @AmnestyNigeria tweeted.

“We call on the #Nigerian authorities to immediately reverse the unlawful suspension and other plans to gag the media, repress the civic space, and undermine Nigerians’ human rights. #TwitterBan.

“This action is clearly inconsistent and incompatible with Nigeria’s international obligations including under the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. #TwitterBan #Nigeria”.
