The Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS), Nsukka Custodial Centre, has applauded Igwe Samuel Asadu, the traditional ruler of Edem-Ani Ogwugu Community, Nsukka LGA, for redeeming his pledge of renovating the centre.

Leonard Nwigwe, the assistant controller in charge of the centre, who stated this when he visited the centre on Friday in Nsukka, said that it was a promise fulfilled in less than one month.

Mr Nwigwe said Mr Asadu had redeemed his pledge to re-roof and paint two dilapidated buildings, as well as repair another building with a leaking roof.

According to him, Mr Asadu made the pledge when he visited the centre on August 18.

“We are happy that the traditional ruler did not waste time to fulfil his promise of renovating buildings at the centre with leaking roofs and walls in bad condition.

“The buildings are now wearing a new look, like a new building, and inmates will no longer struggle to be in a better corner when it’s raining.

“Staff and inmates are excited and grateful to Asadu because many people have visited here and promised to do one thing or the other but never fulfilled their promises till today,” he said.

The assistant controller appealed to others who had made pledges to the centre to expedite actions towards fulfilling their promises.

In a remark, Mr Asadu, who is the chairman of the Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council, said that fulfilling promises made had been part of his family upbringing.

“My parents always tell us to ensure we redeem every promise we make because a promise is a debt.

“That is why before I promise to do something for anybody, I will first check my pocket.

“I am happy that I made a pledge to renovate three dilapidated buildings on August 18, which has been fulfilled in less than one month. I give God all the glory,” he said.

He said that it should be the responsibility of every Nigerian to help maintain infrastructure as well as to ensure the welfare of inmates at correctional centres.

Mr Asadu said this will enable them to become useful citizens to themselves and society when they come out of prison.

“We should not leave everything for government; rather, we should assist government in our various capacities.

“I will continue to assist in addressing some of the challenges of the centre according to resources within my disposal,” he said.

Mr Asadu commended Mr Nwigwe for his leadership qualities and his efforts in addressing some of the challenges of the centre without waiting for government.
