The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has commended the federal government for establishing a disaster relief fund approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

The council’s president-general, Sa’ad Abubakar III, made the commendation on Friday in Abuja in a statement by Salisu Shehu, the council’s deputy secretary-general.

Mr Abubakar commended the initiative, stating it would entrench proactive measures against disasters rather than just reactive ones.

He noted that although long overdue, the council welcomes the development, which aimed to ensure rapid response to disaster victims nationwide.

“The council considers this a step in the right direction,” said Mr Abubakar. “The NSCIA expects the government to establish a department or unit focused on disaster prevention, with mechanisms to minimise or prevent disasters.”

Mr Abubakar also called on well-meaning Nigerians and foreigners to support the Borno State government in aiding recent flood victims.

“The Borno State government has opened a dedicated Flood Relief Account to address the needs of victims.

“The flood, which occurred on September 10, 2024, submerged 70 per cent of Maiduguri and displaced over a million residents,” he said.

The council expressed confidence in Governor Babagana Zulum’s ability to utilise the funds judiciously.
